LAST MINUTE Tips For "Wintering" Your Texas Hill Country Garden

Winter has arrived and spring is right around the corner!  Is your Hill Country Garden ready? While researching how to treat my new garden this winter, I found these handy-dandy tips from Matthew McCabe over at Hill Country Gardener:

  • Prune, prune prune!  Winter prune roses and seasonal prune flowers.
  • Trim bushes and trees.  Now is also a good time for planting new bulbs, trees and bushes.
  • Mulching protects sensitive plants and bulbs, and after you've trimmed all plants and shrubs, mulch the ones you cut back to protect from frost.
  • Use a good shredded pine mulch around the base of Azaleas to protect from freeze and ensure proper blooming in the spring.  This will also provide natural acid and extend the life your your plants, as well.
  • While plants are cut back, it's a perfect time to hard-scape (consider your plant growth, though, and whether or not they will eventually bury your hard work!).
  • Remember to keep plant beds moist during the winter freezes (will not freeze deep into the soil as it does in northern areas).
  • Organic fertilize and/or add bone meal to bulbs and Iris rhizomes.
  • Don't forget to move non-freeze-hardy potted plants into the garage or shed.
  • For extra freeze protection, wrap sensitive  plants with incandescent mini-holiday (not LED) lights under tarps or without tarps, as they provide some warmth and do not burn the plants or tarps.  Plastic covers will likely cause more damage than good.  Light sheets of cloth tarps are significantly better in protecting the plants from the chill and allows the plants to breathe instead of sweat.
  • Use a solution called SUPERthrive to help with the harsh, freezing temperatures.  It is a
http://www.superthrive.com/beneficial plant vitamin solution that helps DE-stress your plants and will provide nutrients to help them make it through the winter.

The Little Sisters of Hoboken are at it again! This time they are filming their first ever Christmas Special right here in Wimberley at the EmilyAnn's Burdine Johnson Studio Theatre!

Those nutty nuns along with Father Virgil and the very talented students of the Mt. St. Helen Parochial School will be singing, dancing, giving away prizes, and even doing a little ballet!

Come see it all come together every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. from November 6th to November 23rd.

Both irreverent and endearing, this show is just plain fun for young and old alike AND a perfect way to kick off 2014 Holiday Season!

Halloween Mystery Dinner
Friday, October 31, 6:30 pm - 9 pm Tasting Room

Help solve the mystery Evil Never Dies!  When Evil-Eyes Emil was driven out of Reaper Junction 100 years ago on Halloween night, he vowed to return to wreak vengeance on the town.   Last night, a local resident staggered into the town square to announce that Emil had been sighted in the woods and true to his century-old proclamation, someone had been the victim of his anger.

Luckily we have a chief investigator to ensure  we catch our man (or woman)!   Come dressed as an 1890 Reaper Junction (Boston) resident, in Halloween garb, or as you wish.  For more fun, call us at 830-895-4233 to let us know you want to pose as one of the six suspects (Gregory Graves:  only child and 'loner'; Bella Bones:  mortician; Jack Lantern: pumpkin farmer; Penelope Crust: bakery owner; Todd Sweeney:  town barber; Tara Cardoli: mystic/fortune teller)!
Picture
Tickets: $55, plus tax ($50 for wine club members) include a delicious meal, appetizer & dessert catered by Lovin' Spoonful, 2 glasses of  wine & an evening of fun!   (You may purchase additional wine by glass or bottle.)  Call the tasting room at 830-895-4233 for tickets or more information.

Menu:  Beef Bourguignon paired with 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Wild Rice Blend, Fresh Steamed Green Beans & Carrots, Harvest Green Salad with dressing, Artisan Selection of Freshly Baked Breads,  Pumpkin Cheesecake with Chocolate Truffle served with 2010 Just Hangin' Merlot.    (Gluten-free friendly meal.  Vegetarian modification available if requested in advance.)

Travel in style:  Visit  http://itsfromgrapes.com/wine-tours/  for information about booking via San Antonio tour group and let someone else drive!  Directions from Kingsland, Texas, here.

Details:  Tickets are payable at time of reservation and are non-refundable.  Will take bookings until 4 pm Thursday October 30 but may sell out before that date.

The Boerne Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Boerne Parks and Recreation, and the Last Chance Forever Bird-of-Prey Conservancy will partner together for the 8th-annual Harvest Moon Festival, a one-of-a-kind Halloween experience for festival goers of all ages!

Boerne's Harvest Moon Festival is a jubilant, old-world day of fun and celebration with a different twist on the origin of Halloween or "Samhain."  Over 2,000 years ago in the region now known as Ireland, the Celts celebrated "Samhain," or the "End Of Summer and Harvest," by uniting together with food and drink, building bonfires, playing music, donning costumes, and predicting each others fortunes, as prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction for the long, dark winter ahead.

Get your spooky (costumes) on and come check out local vendors and enjoy the sounds of the Dulcimer Group Hill Country River Pickers!  Get an up-close look a majestic Hawks, Falcons, Vultures, and other Raptors during two presentations by a Master Falconer John Karger and team from the Last Chance Forever Bird of Prey Conservancy.  There will be live Celtic music by Ravenmoor, The Great Giani, and the strolling mentalist will be performing up-close mind reading, magic, and paranormal entertainment.

Get a reading from our psychic or a beautiful temporary tattoo from Hanna Artist, Zeena.   Trunk or Treat will be available for the kids, as well as a kids' costume contest!   After dark, enjoy an intriguing look into the world of Owls on the torch-lit "Trail of the Mysterious Night Flyers."  Live owls will be featured in the natural environment complete with tour guide to present these fantastic creatures.  Click here for Schedule of Events!

Boerne is approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Kingsland.  Click here for directions!
